PSY 150-GENERAL PSYCHOLOGY RESEARCH PAPER Requirements and Rubric Student Learning Objective (SLO): The student will demonstrate abilities to recognize, respect, and value differing opinions and experiences of others in order to interact collaboratively and include global perspectives when synthesizing information and making decisions. Read this entire document before beginning your paper. Project Objective: To sharpen skills in the core competencies of reading, comprehension, research and following directions. To analyze information and make logical decisions using critical thinking skills, while evaluating, analyzing and applying knowledge to a global setting from a cultural context. Grading: This is a department-wide research paper, for all PSY 150 students. Two grades are earned but are weighted differently (see syllabus); 1.) Research paper 2.) Collaboration Project Instructions: For this research paper students will need to conduct academic research on the topic defined below. Students will write a Research paper and then peer review/discuss each other’s paper. See the topic below; if you have a question or need clarification please email your instructor. Research Paper Topic (this is what you are writing about): Compare the Government’s Social Influences over the people living in a democracy (United States) to those living in a communist country (China). How does the Government (United States vs. China) socially influence/affect the people living in these cultures? Focus your discussions on three domains: 1) family, 2) work, and 3) religious pursuits of those living in these cultures. Points to consider when collecting data Read Carefully : This research paper is about analyzing two diverse governments and their social influence on the people living in their cultures regarding family, work, and religion. Below are some suggested points to also research in understanding these two cultures. Only discuss the points below if they are included under one of the three required subheadings; family, work and religion. Read “Paper Formatting” for what is required in the actual paper (see below). 1. Understand the meaning of Social Influence and how it is being used in the paper. 2. Understand what Communism (China) and Democracy (U.S.) means . 3. Understand and define family, work, and religion as it is used in your paper . 4. Understand each culture; their behaviors, values, and worldview thinking. 5. Understand the strengths and weaknesses of freedom/democracy in the United States? 6. Understand the strengths and weaknesses of communism in China? 7. Understand how life would change if someone moved from China to the U.S? Or the U.S to China? Collaboration component: After the paper is submitted, there will be class collaboration time. Students will discuss democracy and communism with respect to social psychology in groups. Attendance in the class following the submission of the research paper is required for all students and cannot be made up late.
