After a boy by the name of Alan Strang blinds sixhorses with a metal spike, her bench “want[s] to send the boy to prison”(Shaffer, 19) but Hesther insists on sentencing him to psychiatric treatment.Hesther comes to Martin asking him for a favor, to take on Alan as one of hispatients. Hesther is believes that “most people are going to be disgusted bythe whole thing” (19) and truly thinks that Martin is the only psychiatrist“within a hundred miles of [his] desk who can handle him” (20). Hestherbelieves that Martin will withhold judgment and treat Alan fairly, whereasother psychiatrists will not.13. What did Martin Dysart expect in Alan Strang, as a “usual” patient (21)?Initially, Martin Dysart expects Alan Strang to be a boy that “[doses]some little girl’s Pepsi with Spanish Fly” (20). Martin expects Alan to be ausual patient that simply wishes to fulfill his wants and desires.
