Origins of Anti-Semitism 17/09/2007 11:08:00 Antisemitism in West/Central Europe Polemical anti-Semitism 1869-1918 o Speech, letters, books, rhetoric forms of anti-Semitism o Largely non-violent Systematic anti-Semitism 1918-1938 o Typically non-violent, but sparks violence Eliminations anti-Semitism 1938-1945 o Gets violent Anti-Semitism Technically speaking, anti-Semitism really only applies to a particular form of  Jew hatred that has existed since the early 19 th  century Medieval jew hatred manifested itself primarily in religious terms (Jews killed  Christ, Jews are in league with Satan) Economic manifestations also occurred, but hatred was largely religious  based So it used to be that a Jew who converted to Christianity escaped this hatred Modern anti-Semitism is not religious but racial o Emergence of anti-Semitic political parties Until the 20 th  century, anti-Semitism was virtually a Christian phenomenon Anti-Semitism in western/central Europe vs. anti-Semitism in Eastern Europe  (it appeared differently) o Most important difference is that in Western and Central Europe anti- Semitism remained largely non-violent whereas in Russia (eastern)  anti-Semitism became more violent sooner Grew out of the notion that emancipation and everything else had not made  Jews citizens like everyone else European society hadn’t fully welcomed the Jews 1819, Germans were beginning to sense themselves as a nation and there
