Another Lecture 19/09/2007 11:16:00 -The trial of the Jews accused of this ‘blood libel’ crime became a HUGE deal -Even though modern anti-Semitism was different from what came before, there were  still times when anti-Semites could and would still use older forms of Jew hatred to suit  their cause - 1894 in France: The Dreyfus affair An assimilated French, Jewish soldier was accused of selling military secrets  to Germany (the enemy of France in the 1890’s) Tried by a military tribunal and was convicted He was seen as a traitor After he was tried the crowds began to chant: DEATH TO THE JEWS Said that the actions of a single, individual Jew could be very quickly blown  into a generalization of all Jews Ameel Zolah was outraged by the entire process (not a Jewish man) and  thought the trial/outcry went against everything France was built on o He wrote a public letter accusing the French military and government  of going against what they were supposed to do Dreyfus was the single issue in an election campaign The side who supported Dreyfus won the election and he was set free The defeat of anti-Semitism in France tells us that it would be wrong to say  that once Anti-Semitism appeared as phenomenon in Europe, it didn’t just  grow and spread everywhere; it was actually in a decline
