Smith, Nathan Henry (F57217359) The Most Dangerous Game: Literary AnalysisThe Most Dangerous Game is an intriguing story that consists of a grudge match between a courageous, experienced hunter, and a murderous, crazed general. The story begins as the flat, static character Whitney, a crew member, mentions Ship-Trap Island and its strange reputation. He says, ‟ The old charts call it Ship- Trap Island.” He also says, “A suggestive name, isn’t it? Sailors have a curious dread of the place.”(I am quoting from The Most Dangerous Game, and you should be able to see my Works Cited page for what that parenthetical citation actually refers to). This is an example of exposition. The round, static character Sanger Rainsford declares it a hoax, starting an external, person vs. person conflict. Rainsford is the main character or protagonist in the story. When Rainsford hears shots in the night, he goes on the rail of the ship to get a visual. He drops his pipe and falls into the water trying to reach it. This is the inciting action, since it leads into the main conflict in the story. There is a rising action as Rainsford has an external, person vs. nature conflict while he struggles to stay afloat in the Caribbean Sea. Rainsford swims in the direction of the shots. Rainsford is skillful, courageous, and determined and he eventually arrives on Ship-Trap Island and goes into a deep sleep.Rainsford finds a carcass and an empty cartridge when he wakes up. Rainsford questions what type of people would inhabit an island that was so dreaded and foreshadows the type of people that he will meet. He follows a trail to Zaroff’s palatial chateau, where he is held at gunpoint by Ivan. Ivan is a flatand static character. General Zaroff, the antagonist, tells Ivan to stand down and welcomes Rainsford intohis luxurious home. Rainsford thinks that Zaroff is very kind and hospitable as he gives him some of the finest food and wine.
