His compositional output mirrors his occupations: – During his job as a church organist early in his life, he wrote the majority of his organ works--such as this one. – When he was violinist and concertmaster of the court orchestra in Weimar, he wrote the bulk of his orchestral music (such as the Brandenburg concerti) – His later job as cantor of St. Thomas’ Church in Leipzig spurred the creation of his cantatas. C. By his death, he had written a work in virtually every genre except opera. D. Genre: Fugue 1. A fugue is a polyphonic work based on a central theme. Fugues always use imitative counterpoint. E. Timbre: Organ 1. Most powerful of acoustic (non-electric) instruments 2. An extremely large range from its lowest to highest notes 3.
