Topic 4 DQ 1: You are admitting a 19-year old female college student to the hospital for fevers. Using the patient information provided, choose a culture unfamiliar to you and describe what would be important to remember while you interview this patient. Discuss the health care support systems available in your community for someone of this culture. If no support systems are available in your community, identify a national resource. A culture that is not familiar to me is the Asian-American culture. When providing care for a 19- year old Asian American female, the nurse should find out if the patient was raised in accordance with Asian culture and whether or not the patient follows those traditions. In many Asian American cultures, medicinal and non-pharmaceutical therapies are used to heal illnesses and the nurse should assess the patients use of herbal medicines and other remedies. It is essential to understand the cultural considerations and beliefs within the Asian American culture. When interviewing the patient, nurses should determine if there is a language barrier present and if using an interpreter is necessary. Although the patient may be able to hold a conversation in English, medical terminology may be difficult for the patient to understand. In some Asian cultures, eye contact may be avoided as a sign of respect so the nurse should refrain from making eye contact with the patient until the patients comfort level and cultural beliefs are understood (AAOS, n.d.). It is important for the nurse to establish a trusting relationship with this patient and displaying a caring attitude will show the patient that we care about their health and safety concerns. The nurse should be sure to allow sufficient time for the interview and avoid making the interview feel rushed. Given the age and culture of the patient, she may feel uncomfortable sharing intimate and personal information with the nurse. Maintaining a
