ISS 320 Review Sheet Harirism : political-economic discourse. Dreamland Subsidy : The government uses subsidies to encourage people or businesses to buy certain things that the government wishes to be bought. Farms receive subsidies on crops that are over- produced. The government buys up the excess and sells it at very cheap prices to other countries. Land is also subsidized by the government in the 1950’s and still is presently. The land subsidy led to urban sprawl and the creation of many small cities called suburbs that surrounded the city. People were able to work and shop in the city, then drive back to their suburban homes by way of the highway that was originally built to allow the military easy transportation but ended up allowing easy escape for white Americans in the “White Flight.” Edde Plan : Plan designed by French architect Henri Edde working for Dar al-Handasah. Included plans for artificial island for a world trade center, and an 80m boulevard and street layout with no resemblance to original urban grain
