Math 1300 Quiz II Key
Sections A01 and A03
R. Craigen
Winter 2019
NOTES:
•
There are three versions of the quiz here, QIIA, QIIB, QIIC. Be sure to reference the correct version.
•
Remember to annotate row operations when showing work upon which marks depend. I have not done
so here, which is perhaps sloppy, but the objective here isn’t for me to get marks but to show solutions.
•
I am no longer being pedantic in showing only one ERO in most steps in my solutions here. You may
do more than one at a time in the interest of space and time but group together only
operations which,
when done in a different order, yield the same result. If you don’t know whether this is the case, you
probably need to stick to one ERO in each step! Here are two cases where you can group them together
under this rule:
1. You can multiply more than one row by constants (and not do any other EROs in the same step)
2. You can add multiples of one row to more than one other row) and not do any other EROs in
that step)
Remember these are only time and space saving devices
! When you do this it counts as MULTIPLE
EROs, not as a single one. This is important when doing such things as turning series of operations
into products of elementary matrices.
•
My apologies in Q2(b) in two versions of this quiz – I obviously wasn’t paying attention and gave you
two sets of symbols to work from. I have told the markers to accept either one in your answer.
