Pre-Lab 7 I. Preparing for titrations a. Prepare about 250 mL of CO 2 -free water: boil in hot plate for 5 minutes i. Careful: to avoid accidents or burns, adjust boiling water away from the edge of the bench b. Let water cool, cover with watchglass c. Use buret with care, it is expensive d. Buret must be very clean i. Dirtiness can be noted if water drops stick to the interior walls e. If dirty, remove stopcock and scrub buret thoroughly with a brush, soap, and water. f. Then, rinse with tap and DI water. g. Pour about 150 mL of the corrosive NaOH solution into a dry, clean 250 mL beaker i. Keep storage bottle cap tightly closed to avoid exposure of NaOH to air. h. To prevent dilution of solution, rinse buret with 3 small, successive amounts of NaOH i. Although, buret is filled above the 0 mL mark, to fill the tip with solution, it must be drained out of the bottom for the meniscus to be lying between the 0mL and 1mL mark i. Measure volume at 0.01 mL j. If in doubt, ask your TA about the reading. II. Standardization of NaOH a. Weigh primary, dried at 120°C, standard potassium hydrogen phthalate, KHPh, sample between 0.3 g and no more than 0.4 g.
