Alison Klevens Dr. Lausberg PSY 1230 15 September 2019 Death and Dying in The Bucket List The Bucket List surrounds the unlikely friendship of two terminally ill men, Edward Cole and Carter Chambers, as they are forced to come to terms with the unexpected and premature ends of their lives. Though their personalities and backgrounds are extremely different, they must deal with similar illness and life expectancies which require them to accept the concept of their own death. Edward is a cranky billionaire who made his living buying hospitals, saw the end of four marriages, and gets by through life by the aid of his personal assistant Thomas. He is estranged from his family and spent most of his life alone and arrogant. In contrast, Carter is a well-liked, family-oriented man. A knowledgeable autodidact, he gave up his dream of being a history teacher to work as a mechanic for 45 years to keep food on the table for his family. After learning on the same day that they both have under a year to live, Carter creates “The Bucket List” in an attempt to get a handle on the news of his course of illness. Edward finds this list, adds his own items to it, and offers to fund their journey to cross off all the items on the list. Much to the dismay of Carter’s wife, the two set off around the world together to fulfill the list before they die. While doing everything from skydiving, to driving racecars, to visiting the Great Pyramids the two learn more about each other and discuss their thoughts and attitudes on life and death.

While on this adventure, Carter comes to realize the importance of his family in this heavily existential part of his life and he returns home to them. At the same time we see Edward returning home to his empty life. Carter’s cancer soon begins to spread quickly, and he dies during surgery. In Carter’s memory, Edward completes the last items off the bucket list which includes reconciling with his daughter. He speaks at Carter’s funeral citing that, with the help of his friend, this experience of imminent death taught him the basics of life. The final item is crossed off the Bucket List when Edward passes and both of their ashes are placed atop the Himalayas, side-by-side. The Bucket List takes a light and comedic tone in exploring the spectrum of denial to acceptance when it comes to dealing with death. Each character falls differently on this spectrum and the way they view death. Edward is easily angered by his prognosis and treatments and avoids his fear of dying by holding onto the belief that dying people can still have fun. He is

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
