The questions consists of 48 multiple choice which include alternative style questions such as select all that apply, and 2 math questions. 1-6 Part I: Introduction to Pharmacology Understand drug metabolism AKA (biotransformation)- The liver is the single most important site for biotransformation (metabolism). Half-life is affected by absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion. First-pass effect addresses the reduction of available drug when taken orally due to metabolism in the liver before the drug reaches the bloodstream. Kidney function impacts excretion. Kidney disease could slow excretion and extend the drug's half-life. Liver function impacts metabolism. Liver disease could slow metabolism resulting in an extended half- life. Cardiovascular function impacts distribution. Cardiovascular disease could slow distribution resulting in a longer half-life. Know the drug categories: Category A - Pregnant women have not demo a risk to the feus in the 1 st trimester, and no evidence of risk in later trimesters . Category B - Animal studies have not demo a risk to fetus but are no adequate studies in pregnant women, or animal studies have shown an AE, but adequate studies in pregnant women have not demo a risk to fetus durig 1 st trimester, and there is no evidence of risk in later trimesters. Category C - Animal studies have shown AE on fetus but there are no adequate studies on humans; the benefits from the use of the drug in pregnant women may be acceptable despite potential risks, or there are no animal reproduction studies and no adequate studies in humans. Category D - There is evidence of human fetal risk, but the potential benefits from the use of the drug in pregnant women may be acceptable despite potential risks. Category X - Studies in animal or humans demo fetal abnormalities or AR; reports indicate evidence of fetal risk. The risk of use in pregnant women clearly outweighs any possible benefit. Understand teaching for newly prescribed meds- Name, dose, and action of drug Timing of administration Special storage and preparation instructions Specific OTC drugs or alternative therapies to avoid Special comfort or safety measures Specific points about drug toxicity Specific warnings about drug discontinuation Understand assessment for client medication reconciliation (collecting data medication)- History: Chronic Conditions Drug Use Allergies Level of Education and Understanding Social Supports Financial Supports Pattern of Past Health Care

7-13 Part II: Chemotherapeutic Agents Box 13.2- May be more susceptible to CNS and GI effects. Dose adjustment needed. Monitor hydration and nutritional status carefully. Mebendazole is a relatively safe drug with few adverse effects. However, infection by a helminth that impacts absorption of nutrients in a frail older woman could lead to significant dehydration and malnutrition so it would be of particular importance to assess this patient frequently and regularly.
