Nowakowski 1 Ally Nowakowski Mr. Paramo English 1320 18 October 2018 Facebook’s Privacy Violations and User Awareness of Ramifications It was in December 2015 that Harry Davies, a journalist for The Guardian , identified that a voter-profiling firm called Cambridge Analytica, while working for United States senator Ted Cruz, harvested data about over 87 million users without their consent through a Facebook quiz application known as “This is Your Digital Life” and further utilized to influence public political views, especially for the upcoming presidential election. This issue exploded in March of 2018, after former Cambridge Analytica employee Christopher Wylie exposed this tactic, with victims demanding stricter Facebook privacy policies that do not expose private data without explicit user consent (Newcomb). It is no secret that Facebook has had a long history of relentlessly invading personal data of users across the globe to receive record profit and sweeping each wrongdoing under the rug when users retaliate until their anger is mollified. A look at the history of Facebook’s privacy regulation issues provides a revelation of just how many times Facebook has been found culpable of data dissemination allegations, such as scrutinizing the internet search history of its victims. The truth is, after agreeing to Facebook’s lengthy privacy policy, billions of Facebook users remain clueless as to the immense extent that this website utilizes their personal information, and as a result are exploited unethically. Facebook user privacy violation is a critical issue to address because of the proven lack of user awareness and concern when it comes to privacy and data sharing on Facebook. A study

Nowakowski 2 conducted by Phillip Nyoni and Mthulisi Velempini informs users of the dangers of sharing certain types of personal information on social media, where it, by default, can be openly used by third parties, including scammers. In short, the study analyzed user profiles for features relating to their privacy practices. Not only did 33% of Facebook profiles in the study have their full personal details available, but an astounding 37% of users accepted a fake friend request (30), which demonstrates just how easily personal data can find its way into the wrong hands. These statistics emphasize the implication that user knowledge of Facebook’s privacy policy and the ways in which privacy can be enhanced is critical. A similar study conducted by Mary Jane Kwok Choon, examined Facebook users based on their usage patterns by focusing in on self- recognition tendencies and means of privacy protection as well as the privacy paradox, which Kwok Choon addresses in relation to the previously identified finite knowledge of users of exactly how their private information is used on social media websites (349). The study illuminates clear evidence that users show a lack of concern about privacy after their perceived level of privacy is attained through Facebook settings. The major implication of this finding is
