EVIDENT BASED PRACTICE Healthcare problem Pain and anxiety are major problems in patient’s undergoing procedures, with many of them complaining of ineffective pain and anxiety management. Treatment plans are not effectively being adjusting to aid in management of pain and anxiety as they go through their procedures. According to Dasgupta, Beletsky, & Ciccarone (2018) “The evolving approaches to pain treatment and limited drug treatment have fueled spikes in problematic substance use, of which opioid overdose is the most visible manifestation” (p. 182). Significance of the problem The inadequate management of pain may prolong the patients’ recovery, as well as, making their recovery intolerable. The inability to adequately control pain and anxiety is contributing to longer hospitalizations, decreased patient satisfaction, and decreasing the overall health and well- being of our patients. Current practice related to the problem Managing pain requires a multidisciplinary approach for adequate care. Pharmacological interventions alone are not providing adequate pain and anxiety management for our patients. In some instances like in burn patients pharmacological interventions or use of opioids are contraindicated with fluid management and places the patients at risk for hemodynamic instability (Li, J., Zhon, L., Wang, Y., 2017). Impact of the problem and/or patient’s cultural background The issue is further complicated with those patients whose culture or spiritual backgrounds 2

EVIDENT BASED PRACTICE prevent/prohibit them from using any pharmacologic substances or western medicine. Leaving those patients without any form of pain or anxiety relief. According to Poulsen and Coto (2017) music is a common aspect of everyday life for most people around the world and that evidence has indicated that the soothing nature of music can help reduce pain and anxiety as well as improve relaxation (p.172). The current practice for pain and anxiety management today do not provide a holistic approach to care for our patients. PICO Table Patient, population, or problem Relief of pain or anxiety in the adult patient population undergoing invasive procedures. Intervention Providing music therapy as a complementary intervention for the relief of pain and anxiety.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
