EVIDENCE BASED PRACTICE Evidence Table A1. Quantitative Article: (Indicate primary evidence chosen with an A P A reference ) Shanbanloei, R., Golchin, M., Estahani, A., Dolatkhah, R., & Rasoulian, M. 2010. “Effects of music therapy on pain and anxiety in patient’s undergoing bone marrow biopsy and aspiration”. AORN Journal 91 (6): 746-51. Doi: 10.1016/j.aorn.2010.04.001. Background or I n t r o du ctio n Music therapy has been proven to decrease anxiety and pain, but no research has been done on whether music therapy is beneficial when it comes to procedures like bone marrow biopsy or aspiration. Bone marrow biopsies and aspiration is a very painful, invasive, and anxiety producing procedure. It makes sense to try and lessen the pain and anxiety through an inexpensive means of music therapy.

EVIDENCE BASED PRACTICE Review of the L it er at ure The authors had reviewed and cited 35 articles regarding the effects of music therapy on various ages and specialties, like Obstetrics and Surgery to name a few. According to Shabanloei, Golchin, Esfahan, Dolatkhah, and Rasoulian (2006), “Music therapy is a systematic interventional approach that can help patients improve their health and reduce anxiety and pain” (p.746). Discussion of M e t h o d olo g y A quantitative study was completed using an experimental randomized control trial (RCT) and a quasi-experimental, pretest-posttest design that was measured using the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). This article is both an experimental RCT and a quasi- experimental study because they randomly assigned the participants into groups and incorporated a pre/posttest design. “One hundred patients undergoing bone marrow biopsy and aspiration were randomly assigned into one of two groups: one group listened to music during their procedures, and the other did not” (Shabanloei et al., 2006). The patients completed the STAI 5 minutes prior to and 1 minute post procedure as well as rating their pain using a visual pain scale.

EVIDENCE BASED PRACTICE Data An aly s i s They analyzed the validity and reliability of the STAI questionnaire form by testing and retesting and found the STAI was adequate for the study. Central tendency (mean, median, and mode) and variation (standard deviation) were used to describe the demographic data. The results of the study were found to have statistical significance with a p-value less than 0.05 using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, version 13 (Shabanloei et al., 2006). Researcher’s Conclusion The study was able to show that listening to music during the procedure helped to lessen the patient’s anxiety level and pain and is suggested that music therapy be incorporated into practice with these procedures. I agree that music therapy can result in less anxiety and pain with those procedures. Any form of distraction therapy can be beneficial in the aid of lowering one’s anxiety and pain

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
