1. Compare and contrast the utilitarianism of John Stuart Mill and Jeremy Bentham. (Make sure to point out the difference in the emphasis between the two) Jeremy Bentham was a philosopher of ethics and political theory. The utilitarianism of Bentham proposed that the only good that exists is pleasure while the only evil exists is pain. Bentham believed pleasure existed in things such as intensity, quickness, duration etc. John Stuart Will on the other hand, argued a different point of view. Although mill advocated based on the utilitarianism of Bentham; mill argued differently as he argued that pleasure should not only be considered on the quantity of pleasure. But also concerning the fact that some pleasures are more pleasurable than others. Secondly, Mills statement differs from Bentham as mill argues people desire happiness, while Bentham argued happiness should be given equal weight. Lastly, mills version differs from Bentham as mill relied heavily on effectiveness of internal sanctions, like guilt and remorse based on actions. Similarly, mill and Bentham use the view of utilitarianism to inform law and social policy. Both philosophers also attack social traditions that appeal to natural order. 2.
