PSYCH 120A STUDY GUIDE LECTURE #1A: OVERVIEW Introduction to Memory: Mnemonics: help to enhance memory through images or use of prior knowledge, however, they aren’t infallible and can lead to errors (Castle, Pastel or Castel?) What does it mean to have a good memory? a standard memory task is to present a list of words to participants (20 or 30 items). Their memory verbatim (recall) is really bad. Many people think computers have better memory than humans. Even so, human memory verbatim is utilized for eyewitness testimonies (which can lead to sentence innocent people). Memory verbatim is also involved in poetry and songs. What is memory used for? -Retrieve related items: temporally related and conceptually related -Retrieve useful information: even though it’s impossible to know in advance why or when it will be important. DVD Analogy: 1-Encoding: record on an electronic disk 2-Storage: store the DVD in a drawer 3-Retrieval: play the disk back on a DVD player However, this is a bad analogy because: -Perceptions do not equal memory -Memory is not literal -Forgetting is a complex process (not all – or none) Example of drawing the penny in class: to remember the penny there are several cognitive processes involved: attention, object recognition, memory, decision making, etc.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
