reflection. In what ways does globalization challenge identity? Globalization often challenges identity greatly. As ideas are spread, many traditional cultures are forgotten and people are forced to adapt into a new society, where many aspects of life are similar to other countries. Globalization spreads the same ideas throughout different nations, so that people are becoming alike and have similar values. The universalization of popular culture combines many trends over the world, which can be a good thing or bad thing. As trends merge together, cultures lose their distinct traditions and collective identity. Since globalization leads to homogenization of the world, cultural diversity grows less and traditions fade. People around the world are exposed to new values and beliefs that others have, and this may affect or even change cultures and their morals. For example, the Potlatch community in Canada had a gift giving feast hosted in order to exchange gifts. These gifts included storable food, things acquired from nature, and other things. After Europeans introduced new products, the aboriginals lost their perspective and adapted into the European economy. The
