Cognitive Psychology: studies thinking, memory, attention, etc. Mnemonics can enhance retrieval: pastel, castle illusion to remember the professor’s name. -First time meeting someone, we are likely to forget the person’s name because we are not paying attention or because there are no previous experiences to relate to the name. No associations (names are arbitrary labels). *Easy learning leads to fast forgetting MEMORY: -What is memory for? Functional approach -Why do we forget and when? It can be studied through research -Metamemory questions: self-experimentation? Clear distinction between human memory and AI (computers can verbatim long list of digits with no errors). Sometimes human memory has flow compared to a video camera (eyewitness situation, etc). VIDEO ANALOGY OF MEMORY IS WRONG: -Perception does not equal memory -Content of memory is not literal -Forgetting is not all-or-none
