Spouse, grandparent, or even just a friend developed a terminal disease that resulted in immense suffering and pain, do you think your loved one should have the right to ask for medical help to end their life? Brittany Maynard Was diagnosed with a terminal brain cancer with 11 months to live but she would lose herself to cancer well before 7 months. According to Oxford Neuro-Oncology , patients in the last stage of brain cancer experience intense migraines, epileptic seizures, loss of vision,speech, movement,and severe personality changes. This may seem like a tragic story but it really isn’t because she had her right to a peaceful death. She was diagnosed early on enabling her to have the ability to fully comprehend the decision she had to make for her future. She made the decision to move to oregon where physician assisted suicide is legal. She told CNN that she wanted to stay in control of her destiny, she wanted to spare her family of watching her degrade slowly, she wanted her family to remember her for who she is not what the cancer made her in to. She died on november 1 2014 10 months after diagnosis using the aid of dying medication. she describes the amount of relief she felt after being prescribed the medication saying “ I was able to live out the rest of my life knowing I was in control and without fear of what I would become. Brittney evoked a chain reaction, giving people a right to speak up. one year later the right to die act legalized in california sparking change. Today I want to share with you the right to a quality dying experience, first discussing the history and impacts, then i will argue the intention of euthanasia.
