Running Head: WEEK 3 JOURNAL The concept of convulsions to treat mental illness goes all the way back to the sixteenth century. The seizure-induction practiced by electricity began in Italy in 1938. Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT). ECT is a procedure that sends electrical impulses through the brain with the goal being to induce a seizure ( Getzfeld, A., and Schwartz, S. 2013). Unilateral ECT, according to some studies, has no determined cognitive effect on the brain. Autobiographical memory has consistently confirmed to be decreased by ECT. This procedure is done under the use of anesthesia. I believe this treatment method is considered cruel and crude now and in the future. Any time anesthesia is used for surgeries or anything else can be a concern. From what I’ve studied is that general anesthesia is essential it also affects the brain and how it processes things.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
