13.03 Acts of Congress Part I: Explain the significance of each of the following items using information from the lesson. 1. District of Columbia Compensated Emancipation Act Released slaves and indentured servants in District of Columbia. Since DC isn’t technically a state, this was necessary to emancipate people there. It was important because people were still enslaved, and there’s no room for that in this country. 2. 13 th Amendment Abolished slavery, slaves were freed. No man could own another man, which is pretty groovy. Civil rights had a long way to go, but this was a great start. 3. 14 th Amendment Every natural-born person is a free citizen in America. This is especially important because it’s been brought up in recent politics regarding the children born to illegal immigrants in the US. 4. 15 th Amendment Voting rights could not be taken away on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude. Free black men could vote, women’s suffrage still had to wait a hot minute.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
