SPHU 2150 Midterm Know the following concepts estimated global burden of disease (percent) linked to environmental sources The significance of the environment for humsn health is high due to exposure to potentially hazardous agents which account for many of the forms of environmentally associated morbidity and mortality, this includes microbes, toxic chemicals and metals, pesticides, and radiation. The estimated 50 million people look at week 1 page 3. The principal determinants of health worldwide Pollution Population Poverty Why children in comparison with adults represent a group that is especially vulnerable to environmental hazards There are a few vulnerable subgroups these include elderly, ill, pregnant, and children. Children are highly vulnerable because of their small body size especially babies. So if they are exposed to the same level of hazardous agents that an adult was also exposed to and showed no symptoms, the baby may show symptoms because the toxin is a higher percentage of their body than the adult. This along with an underdeveloped immune system makes babies very vulnerable to environmental hazards. The epidemiologic risk transition characteristics A shift in pattern of morbidity and mortality from causes related primarily to infectious and communicable diseases to causes associated with chronic, degenerative diseases. Shows a transition from a least developed country with high rate of communicable diseases and low rate of chronic disease to a developing country with equal rates of chronic and communicable then a developed country

with high rates of life style related chronic diseases and low rates of communicable diseases. Stages of the demographic transition demonstrates: Composed of three stages: o 1. Pyramid shape, has a high birth rate and high death rate with most of the population young and very few people old o 2. Wide base so high birth rate but the death rate begins to drop rapidly leaving few elders and more younger o 3. Third stage is a lower birth rate and lower death rate with almost an even age distribution among the population Effects of rapid growth of the world’s population The rapid growth of our population is increasing exponentially and threatens to overwhelm all our available resources which may lead to water and food scarcity and famine in regions of the world The main consequences of the growing population is overtaxing the carrying capacity, food insecurity, loss of biodiversity, and urbanization The contributions of epidemiology to environmental health

The main contributions of epidemiology to environmental health are: concern with populations, use of observational data, and a methodology for study designs (descriptive and analytic studies) Environmental epidemiology the study of diseases and health conditions that are linked to environmental factors 1. Concern with populations environmental epidemiology studies a population in relation to morbidity and mortality 2. Use of observational data

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
