LING100 (001/002) Midterm#1 Study Guide WT1 2019-20 LING 100 (001/002) Midterm#1 Study Guide General Information The midterm covers all the material from the first three modules: phonetics, phonology, and morphology. This includes: Yule, Ch. 3, 4, & 6 Class lectures, slides, & notes for the first 3 modules Videos & other assigned materials for the first 3 modules Make sure you know and understand all the crucial terms and concepts (especially those printed in bold in the book or highlighted in the slides) and that you are able to apply them. Note that Yule has a handy glossary in the back of the book containing definitions of key terms. Use Canvas quizzes 1-3, the tutorial exercises, and assignment 1 to practice your understanding of the material. You should have access to quiz answers and tutorial answers The questions on the midterm will mostly be short-answer questions designed to test your understanding and analytical skills. Specific content-related points NOTE: the following list is NOT EXHAUSTIVE ! anything in the material listed above is fair game for the midterm) You have to know the English IPA symbols and what sounds they stand for: only the IPA symbols that are discussed in Yule ch. 3 or on the eNunciate website (and marked in green - except for the voiced retroflex approximant / ɻ /). NO IPA CHART will be provided
