Week 10+ Notes November 10, 2015 Lecture Notes German racial policy but still, Hitler had brought Germany back where it should be, restoring national pride, breaking the chains of Versailles What were the reasons for Nazi popularity? Can we simply assume that the Germans went along with the regime because of the system of terror, out of fear, or were they indoctrinated through Nazi propaganda? Resistance, opposition, collaboration, outright support and so on We’ve stopped in our discussion of Nazi racial policy in the approach to 1935 We talked about how in 1933 the Nazis had signaled their ideological intentions with the Jewish business boycott, called off in 24 hours due to the international response, and even the domestic one Then a series of legal initiatives, the hereditary farm law and so on, aimed at Jews to get rid of Jews from civil service Once that law was enacted you found cultural institutions that didn’t have government money, private institutions, trying to cover their tracks, to show their allegiance to the new regime, hiding their socialist sympathies etc. (80% of the membership of the party joined after 1930) Now you have all these careerists, opportunists, people wanting to practice law and medicine joining the party So now the social composition of the party changed, you have more established people in society due to the rise in power Leadership was convinced that these weren’t true Nazis and so they stopped membership to stop these careerists After this initial burst of discriminatory legislation there were no new initiatives in 1933-35 in racial policy that lower ranks wondered what was wrong But in September 1935, the Nuremburg laws were announced, a real landmark in the twisted path of the Nazis toward the holocaust If you take a view that the Nazis knew that they were doing all along, that Hitler’s modus operandi was to take initiative, do something, like the laws in 1933, then to step back, let the population get used to this idea, and then after they’ve absorbed it, and you take another step forward, then this is a really Intentionalist view Hitler had at one point said “I like to maneuver slowly until I’ve moved my enemies into a corner and stab them in the heart You can find a quote that fits everything But this business of maneuvering enemies was certainly part of his operation The biggest event in the party’s calendar is hardly a week would pass without some sort of celebration, some sort of national (not holiday necessarily) but some sort of commemoration—beer hall putsch anniversary, Hitler’s birthday, always something going on, always some sort of national socialist cheering But the high point every year was the Nuremburg party rally September 15 th It was like an American political convention where all of the Hitler youth come In 1935, Hitler had planned to give a speech on foreign policy
