1 vers l’abime final VERS L’ABIME FINAL (September 2007) Just when going over the initial title of "vers l’abîme" (towards the abyss) for a last screening, I am even more willing to make my point of view more complex. More complex, that is to say trying not only to see the multiple and diverse game of interactions, imbrications, retroactions, planetary antagonisms, but also the conflicting aspects of a same phenomenon, particularly what within globalization binds while contrasting and what contrasts while binding. In this regard globalization is both one and several. There are several globalizations within globalization (technico-economic globalization, globalization of democratic and humanist ideas, globalization of culture, being itself one and several, upholding antagonist aspects as I indicated in the chapter la culture et la globalisation au XXIe siècle (culture and globalization in the 21 st Century). Technique/economic globalization itself offers a double aspect: while developing the dominant supremacy of the West, it develops the emergence of new Asian powers in China and India, or Latin- American, Brazil, and it tends to develop at the same time and by opposition, a multipolar world. While worsening the subordinations, its processes have led to the inter-subordination of the human race and de facto to shared destiny for mankind. The paradox is that this shared destiny has been acquired mostly from the extension of deathly planetary threats such as the multiplication of weapons of mass destruction and the uninterrupted degradation of the biosphere. There is a Gordian knot between negative and positive processes. Another "complex" aspect I pointed out as soon as 1990 within Terre Patrie and which has been acknowledged for its obviousness, the techno-economic unification engendered by the West is leading to a balkanization on an ethno-religious-national basis over the entire globe. Yugoslavia’s self-destruction covered by nationalist-religious upsurges followed by the implosion of USSR and the conflicts it engendered (Chechnya, Armenia, Azerbaijan, the Caucasus) have worked up the tendencies to identity backward surge that have been looking for their assertion on a previously inexistent national basis. This explains the nationalist outburst, the return of the Religious in political ideology indeed within new wars showing religious elements (Yugoslavia, Armenia/Azerbaijan). The implosion of the USSR and of the death of the State bureaucratized economies did arouse the planetary triumph of the most brutal capitalism, stripped of its regulatory antagonism: Socialism. Of course there have been democratic consequences

It was also the planetary rapid expansion of ancient religions, on top of the ruin of the down-to-earth salvation religion that was Communism; it was the virulence of new Nationalisms on top of the ruins of Internationalisms.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
