Power, Influence, and Politics I. Power: discretion and means to enforce your will over others A. 5 bases of power 1. Legitimate: managers who obtain compliance primarily bc of formal authority to make decisions a) Positive: focuses constructively on job performance b) Negative: tends to be threatening and demanding to those being influenced 2. Reward: can obtain compliance by promising or granting rewards 3. Coercive: make threats of punishment and deliver actual punishment 4. Expert: given by valued knowledge or information 5. Referent: comes into play when personal characteristics and social relationships are the reason for others’ compliance a) Drives success b) Reputation is another aspect of referent power B. Position vs personal power 1. Position power: source of influence is associated w/ particular job or position within organization 2. Personal power: possess independent of your position or job 3. People have 3 reactions to attempts to manage or influence outcomes a) Resistance, compliance, commitment 4. Need to use power responsibly, ethically, effectively C. Commitment is superior to compliance
