Chapter 2- Continental drift theory and plate tectonic theory Alfred wegener thought about plate tectonics in 1920s and made a book on it.(Pangea) Support: Puzzle pieces Fossils match across the seas Rock types and geological features Ancient climates(glacial ice deposits all over the place) The Great Debate(Wegener) There is nothing that could possibly move the continents There is too much friction with the ocean floor to try and move the plates In WW2 there was much submarine warfare and they started to see the bottom of the floor much better and the oceanographers thought wegener could be correct. What was Wegener wrong about? It wasn’t the continents moving it was the plates moving on the lithosphere.(saw it from the mid atlantic ridge. Lithosphere is a very strong layer Lithosphere is made up of crust and mantle Because the asthenosphere is malleable the lithosphere is able to move over it. Earth’s Major Plates

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
