Their Eyes Were Watching God: Spider Web Final Discussion Prepare each of the following questions for discussion. Remember: you are using these notes to foster discussion and NOT just answering questions. Good things to include: page numbers, quotations, questions, ideas, and opinions. 1. Chapters 18 & 19 are FULL of allusions. We encounter references to the flood, mentions of the title, etc.. Choose a few of these allusions and discuss their significance. - “They seemed to be staring at the dark, but their eyes were watching God”(160). - This allusion to the title is making reference to the hurricane that is raging towards Janie and Tea Cake. - Alludes to the darkness in her life (hurricane, failed marriages), which she endures while having faith that she will fulfill her dreams (God, love) 2. Discuss the change in Tea Cake. What has happened to him? How does it impact his and Janie’s relationship? Ultimately, is his downfall his fault, hers, or just a matter of chance? What does his tragedy signify about Janie and her journey? - Tea Cake has been bit by a rabid dog, causing him to go paranoid.
