CANCER & PLANNED PARENTHOOD 2 Referred to as a silent killer, cancer can start just about anywhere in the body and spread uncontrollably without notice or warning. It is not a disease, yet a name given to a collection of diseases (NCI, 2015). Cancer begins when mutations or abnormities are present in genes that are responsible for the regulation of the growth and health of cells. The mutation can cause tumors to form in the area of the body where cells have this abnormality. One cancer out of this collection is breast cancer. This type of cancer can begin when cells in the breast begin to grow out of control which causes a tumor in or near the breast (BreastCancer.org, 2018). According to Amanda Chin, in her 2010 article, breast cancer was the second common cancer in woman right behind skin cancer. Overall, cancer is the #2 cause of death among Americans, with heart disease being #1 (Chan, 2010). One agency that always comes to mind when I think about preventative screenings is Planned Parenthood. Although this agency has made national news over other areas of their practice, there are some great resources and outreach programs to benefit the men, women, and children of the areas served by this agency.
