KINE 4323/5323 #3 Lab Activity FITTS’ LAW-Chapter 7 Introduction Purpose: To examine the relation between the time to make rapid arm movements and the difficulty of the task. This relation is expressed formally as Fitts' Law, in which task difficulty is defined in terms of the distance to move and the accuracy demands at the movement. Fitts' Law has been shown to generalize to a variety of physical activity and ergonomic situations where speed and accuracy play important roles. Textbook Reading Chapter 7 Task and Equipment Needed The task is to tap repeatedly as fast as possible between two targets. Equipment: 1. pencil 2. Fitts' targets (print out the 4 pages from Blackboard) Procedures The purpose of the lab is to assess how movement time (MT) is affected by the difficulty of tasks. Fitts defined task difficulty in terms of target size (W, which is the width of the target) and the distance to move (D, which is the distance between targets). He quantified task difficulty (which he called "index of difficulty," i.e., ID) by using the following equation: ID = log2 (2D/W) For this lab, Four combinations of task difficulty will be used. The easiest task has D = 4 cm and W = 2 cm. Solving the equation for ID, that would be the log (base 2) of (2 x 4)/2. This works out to the log2 of 4, which is 2. The most difficult task has D = 16 cm and W = 1 cm. That is, the log2

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
