The Virtual Lab In order to complete this assignment you must purchase The Virtual Unknown Microbiology Internet Edition ( VUMIE ) software. For instructions on the purchase and use of this software, please return to the Module 1 Case Assignment Area. Follow the purchase instructions for either a Mac or Windows computer. You may also need to install Java and/or use a different browser if you experience difficulties when viewing any of the links for videos within the laboratory manual or assignment. Follow the instructions below. You should have answers for questions #4, #6, #8, #9, #10, #12, #13 and #14. 1. Open the VUMIE 2012™ software. Watch the videos “ Before Getting Started” and “Orientation to the Virtual Lab” to get a glimpse of how the lab is laid out and how the software operates. Once you get a feel for how the lab simulation works and what it provides, you are ready to try to work in the Virtual Lab. 2. Note that initially there is nothing showing in the Unknown indicator box and that no media or reagents are available for use (as shown below). 3. You must have an unknown selected before any work can begin. a. Chose auto-inoculation. b. For this exercise, please select “Enteric Bacillus”, indicating you want a specific pre-defined unknown microbe and case study randomly assigned from those fitting that description. c. Provide an identifying name (“Label”) for the unknown. For this exercise, use the identifier “Lab1”. d. Click on “OK” to have an unknown assigned based on the parameters you just selected. e. Read the Case Study. When you are done, exit the Case Study. 4. Review the Gram stain. Your first test in identifying your unknown is performed when you record your interpretation of a Gram stain image that appears. The software asks for Gram reaction and cell morphology. Try to exit the Gram stain image without making any selections. What message do you receive?

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
