Unformatted text preview: IE 28 STUDY ON THE EFFECT OF BODY MASS INDEX ON RESTING HEART RATE Chua - Lim - Vinluan BACKGROUND BODY MASS INDEX (BMI) The Body Mass Index (BMI) is an estimator of body fat based on the height and weight of an individual. BMI can be used to screen for weight categories (i.e. underweight, normal, overweight, obese) that may lead to health problems but it is not diagnostic of the body fatness or health of an individual. RESTING HEART RATE (RHR) The resting heart rate (RHR) of a person is the number of contractions of the heart that occur in a single minute while the body is at complete rest. This number will vary depending upon the age, gender, and general health of a person. The resting heart rate of a person is a strong indicator of that person’s basic level of fitness. SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY Understanding one’s health and fitness and factors that affect it can be a way to make sure that people can make conscious efforts to stay fit despite the challenges. STATISTICAL MODEL RESPONSE VARIABLE Resting Heart Rate BLOCKS BMI classification (underweight, normal, overweight, obese) Lifestyle (low activity, high activity) Sex (male, female) MULTIFACTOR EXPERIMENT DESIGN Yijk = μ + i + βj + ɣk + (β)ij + (βɣ)ij + (ɣ)ij + (βɣ)ij + ϵijk μ = overall mean of the data i = effect of the ith level of BMI factor (i = U, N, OW, OB) βj = effect of the jth level of Sex factor (j = M, F) ɣk = effect of the kth level of type of lifestyle factor (k = low, high) METHODOLOGY Gather at least 32 samples composed of individuals from UPD Industrial Engineering students who are classified as underweight, normal, overweight, and obese according to BMI standards. Sampling method is convenience sampling. To determine BMI classification, the group will first measure the subject’s height with a tape measure and weight with a weighing scale and then calculated using the equation: BMI=weight in kilograms/(height in meters)2 Resting heart rate was recorded using a blood pressure monitor. RESULTS & ANALYSIS 29/32 data points; 90.63% completion RESULTS & ANALYSIS R^2= 68.7484% R^2 adj=32.6888% CONCLUSION The group has found that Body Mass Index (BMI) has no significant effect on resting heart rate (RHR) of UP Diliman Industrial Engineering students. Activity level and sex have no significant effect on RHR as well. ...

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
