Lab 3. Extraction of a Three Component Mixture CHM345 Section 4 9/18/19 Abstract. The technique of acid-base extraction and liquid-liquid extraction are used to separate a mixture of solid benzoic acid, ethyl 4-aminobenzoate, and 9-fluorenone. These compounds are examples of an organic acid, organic base, and a neutral organic material. A solution of the solid mixture in ether is extracted sequentially with 3M HCl and 3M NaOH solutions. Benzoic acid is soluble in aqueous base, forming benzoate ion. Ethyl 4-aminobenzoate is soluble in acid, forming 4-ethoxycarbonyanilinium ion. 9- fluorenone is not acidic or basic in water, and in insoluble in aqueous solutions. The benzoic acid was recovered on acidifying the basic extract (146.5% recovery). The ethyl 4-aminobenzoate was recovered by adding base to the acid extract (153.5% recovery). The 9-fluorenone was recovered from the ether solution. Introduction. As we showed in Lab. 2, liquid-liquid extraction can be used to separate organic material on the basis of differential solubility in two immiscible solvents. Also, the acid or base properties of organic materials can be used to change their solubilities in polar (aqueous) solvents by converting the substances into ionic materials. For example, benzoic acid has a solubility in water of 0.3g/100mL water, or 0.1% (1). Because water is polar with dielectric constant 78.30 (1), benzoic acid is not expected to be very soluble in water. But benzoic acid can be chemically manipulated. Since it is an acid, it will react with a base like NaOH according to the following balanced reaction.
