Stephanie Lezama History 2010 Section 4 VSA #5 1. Jacob’s early life, her first six years of life to be exact, were happy and she was oblivious to the fact that she was even a slave. Both her parents and grandmother shielded her from the terrible fact that she was a slave and allowed her to live this sort of life up until her mother passed away. After her mother passed Jacobs said, “…I learned, by the talk around me that I was a slave.” She was then given to mistress of her mother and still lived a pretty easy life for a slave. 2. The story tells us a lot about slavery for women. It tells us how women are not valued the same as men are or sold at the same price. However, “If God has bestowed beauty upon her, it will prove her greatest curse…” because the most beautiful slaves became victims of sexual harassment from their masters. Unfortunately, Jacobs was one of those women. This usually led to the slaves having children as well. If that wasn’t enough, these incidents would lead to the mistresses becoming jealous of the slaves and throwing their anger and frustration out on them. The mistresses would whip and insult the slaves who were sexually assaulted by the master, but Jacob’s particular case was different because she stated that “…he would not allow any body else to punish me.” She refers to her
