The Road by Cormac McCarthy Ideas Conventions/Examples Reader’s response Hope despite desolation 1. Bleak setting shown through figurative language a. the planet is like a ‘cold glaucoma’; b. ‘days more grey than what had gone before’ where the distinction between night and day is getting lesser and lesser; c. paints a very desolate setting which appears to be hopeless d. the colours used to describe the setting/environment are white, dark and grey with some red which symbolizes destruction & has the effect of reminding the reader of the bleak, hopeless setting 2. Love of the father & son which shows some hope a. mutually dependent on each other; the boy depends on the father for emotional & physical well-being & the boy is everything to the father b. Eg: “Hi papa’, “I’m here’ – both father & son reassuring each other that they are there for each other c. Eg: ‘each the other world’s entire’ – the boy gives the father hope & the Reader is positioned to have insights into the human will to survive & attempt to overcome odds in the most difficult settings. The father & son are in a terrible situation yet they have a strong paternal bond which appeals to the reader’s values of family bonds/connections. It gives the reader faith that family relationships will survive the worst natural disasters.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
