2 THE WHITE MAN’S BURDEN REVIEW The White Man’s Burden, a poem by Rudyard Kipling could be used by both imperialists and anti-imperialists to support the creation of an American empire overseas as well as to question the American empire based on the move. The line that begins all stanzas of the poem, ‘Take up the white man’s burden’ may be seen as a persuasion, hence the repetition, to urge America to take up the responsibility of the overseas empire. The second stanza gives a validation of the persuasion by urging for patience and highlighting the benefit of expelling the threat of terrorism. This reason and others stated throughout the poem that tend to be in support of imperialism though are racist in nature seeing the terms used to refer to the Filipinos like ‘Your new-caught, sullen peoples, Half-devil and half-child’ and other terms such as ‘heathen folly’, ‘childish days’ in 3 rd and 7 th stanzas respectively.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
