CS 1104 Computer Systems Discussion Forum Unit 6 Generally speaking, according to an article published in Tech’Ed (2013), the Hack CPU has two main registers, D and A, where the D register holds the contents that should go to one of the two ports of the ALU as input, and presents the result value of the ALU inside the CPU, whilst the A register is responsible for keeping the time of the memory access. The other input of the ALU comes either from the A register, or from the memory (M), but this can never be done at the same time. To overcome this problem, either the A register should be an output of the ALU or should be loaded with a 16-bit constant using A-instructions.
