Fluent readers read in phrases that show their understanding of the text. Fluent readers read with appropriate speed, accuracy, and intonation. Poetry is meant to be read aloud with great fluency. Great poets read with fluency because they understand the poem’s intention and try to convey this message in their reading by: reading with appropriate expression and intonation. reading in phrases that convey the meaning to the reader. honoring not only the language in the poem but also punctuation and line breaks. varying their vocal range (high, low, med, whispers, etc.) and physical gestures to tell the story of the poem, while taking the reader on a journey.
