Graduate School of Education Introduction cont’d Weblogs look very different from regular “webpages”. You can tell they are made by amateurs. There is something very powerful about this. Blogs are read/write and they aren’t much harder to use than email! Blogs get past the necessity to learn HTML to build a web presence Blogs can become personal websites - you can add links, pictures and even movies. Having your own place online (as opposed to a social media page) is important for individuality Blogs are a process; they have reflections and conversations that are associated with the content shown there

Graduate School of Education The many classroom uses of blogs Class portals : The blog can be a one-stop place for anything and everything that happens in the classroom! Reducing handouts! Put all those handouts online! Homework blogs: No excuses! News feeds on relevant topics. This allows a classroom to look at topic-based news searches Collaborative space : comments from learners, parents, and even outside guests or experts. Students take turns writing blog posts. Group projects.

Graduate School of Education More uses in the classroom CyberPals : Today’s take on the Penpal. Allows students from distant classrooms to interact readily. Reflection, timeline: Students can reflect on the year gone by. What they have done and where they have come from Computer skills : Classrooms that use blogging as a supplement to their curriculum are virtually assured that learners will have improved computer skills. School website as a blog? One common complaint about school websites is that they are not updated often enough. Blogs can make the school’s site easier to update and allows for interactivity.
