PATIENT’S SPRITUAL NEEDS CASE ANALYSIS 2 Patient’s Spiritual Needs Case Analysis Question One Gilbert (2019) opines that being cognizant of patients’ and family religious beliefs is imperative for effective healthcare provision by medical practitioners. Therefore, in the foregoing case study, the physician attending to James should be fully knowledgeable of the Christian faith that Mike and Joanne the parents have. The knowledge then becomes crucial in conducting a spiritual needs assessment that allows the physician to help them get the best health outcome for their son James while still keeping their faith in God strong. The spiritual needs assessment shows that the parents strongly believe that God can cure their son as has been demonstrated by them seeking miraculous healing having witnessed a close friend regain mobility after suffering a serious stroke. At the same time they believe that although God can cure miraculously, He can still use the physicians in curing their sick child as has been demonstrated by bringing James back to the hospital for further treatment when the healing prayers did not grant them the desired healing. In spite of their actions so far, the nephrologist must continue respecting patient preference and autonomy because they were informed by beneficence and nonmaleficence. However, based on the spiritual needs assessment they should be shown that allowing Samuel the twin brother donate a kidney will be the ultimate demonstration of Christian love the brother can give to sick James. However, they should be convinced that Samuel will save James’ life and the two will have a chance of living healthy lives without any complications.
