CASE STUDY ON MORAL STATUS 2 Introduction Veatch (2016) notes that determining the moral status presents a bioethical dilemma especially of an unborn fetus that many including health professionals continue to wrestle with in regards to determining the type of human beings that warrants to be accorded full human rights. As such, to clear the ethical dilemma posed when considering the rights of the unborn, five distinct theories have been developed to help in decision making for the good of all parties that face such bioethical dilemmas by focusing on a particular set of characteristics and the perception that it is what dictates the existence of moral. Subsequently, the central them from theory on human properties holds that only and distinctively humans alone have moral status unlike any other being on earth because we have the human DNA passed to us during conception by our parents. Cognitive properties theory differs with the human properties theory by pointing that the unique biological characteristics do not endow humans with moral status but rather it emanates from on having cognitive abilities such as thinking, memory, comprehension, and consciousness. The theory also admits that such abilities are not exclusive to humans alone and that these abilities are also only expressed in competent adult humans and not children. Therefore, the theory purports that lack of such cognitive abilities infers one is devoid of any moral status. According to Shea (2018), the concept of moral agency perceives that having moral
