Surname 1 Name of Student Professor Course Twoness of identity W. E. B. Du Bois has introduced many concepts such as double consciousness (twoness of identity), color line and the veil, or rather, the experience of the black in a country divided by color. Double consciousness describes the individual sensation of feeling as though one’s identity is divided into several parts, making it difficult or impossible to have one unified identity. Du Bois speaks of this within the context of race relations in the United States. From my understanding of the text, the Black Americans have lived in a society which has demeaned them so much that they cannot have peace in unifying their black identity with the white identity. It is reasonable to say that the concept of twoness of identity or double consciousness affects almost everyone in American life. American society comprises different faces, and some of the faces may seemingly not be favorable. Currently, America is confronted with a bifurcated image or rather an identity. First, America views itself as the sole dominant of military power and secondly; it sees itself as the nation that is a new home to millions of immigrants. According to my opinion, this is also a double consciousness sensation because Americans want to belong to two categories of identity.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
