Atoms in a metal, like the filament in the light bulb, are arranged in an orderly fashion. The metal looks somewhat like a crystal and the arragement of atoms is called a lattice. Now each atom interacts with its neighbors via electrostatic forces. This interaction makes the atoms look like they are connected by springs, so the atoms can vibrate around their equillibrium positions in the lattice. As the temperature of the metal increases, the atoms vibrate more vigorously - they move farther from their equillibrium points (on average). Now, when the metal is at low temperatures, and electron trying to move through the lattice sees

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
