Surname1 Name Date Reaction Time and Following Distance. In driving the reaction time (RT) refers to the amount of time taken between the driver detecting a hazard and the beginning of his action to prevent the occurrence of an accident. The action taken can either be accelerating, pressing the brake pedal or moving the steering wheel. The shorter the reaction time, the higher the possibility of avoiding an accident and the RT varies widely among drivers. For a professional racing driver he or she can posses an RT of 0.2 of a second which involves detecting the hazard, assessing the impact it may have and taking the next course of action. For an average driver however the RT may be longer to as 0.5 of a second which is satisfactory however having an RT of more than 1 second is extremely dangerous as it depicts the slowness in the driver. Being aware of one's reaction time is a very vital element among drivers although it is hard to measure the RT. However, through drive simulator testers one can have a rough idea of
