Answers 1. (b) Nutrient-dense foods are high in nutrients, such as vitamins and minerals, but low in energy (kilocalories). 2. (b) Though an orange ice pop or orange sherbet may be a refreshing treat on a hot day, the orange is by far the most nutrient-dense food among these choices. The orange-flavored drink is a sugary drink. 3. (c) The DRIs recommend the amount of nutrients needed to prevent deficiencies, maintain good health, and avoid toxicity. 4. (b) The EAR is the amount of a nutrient that would meet the needs of half of the individuals in a specific age and gender group. The EAR is used to obtain the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA), which is the amount of a nutrient that should be consumed daily to maintain good health. The Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) is the maximum amount of a nutrient that can be consumed on a regular basis that is unlikely to cause harm. 5. (a) The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend that you balance kilocalorie intake over time and sustain a healthy body weight. Walking or jogging are wonderful ways to be physically active.
