MANAGEMENT Introduction The massive flooding in Rhode Island on March 30, 2010, has caused a national computer system outage at CVS, affecting prescription services in all 7,000 of its drugstores. Phone lines and the ability to process the insurance claims were affected, and delays in filling prescriptions were happening because of the outage. This paper assesses the reasons for the outage and outlines mitigation strategies to ensure that a natural disaster does not have such a devastating effect on CVS business anymore ( Aven, 2016 ). At the end of the day their some weaknesses that needed to be implemented in the disaster recovery plan that could help the organization maintain its dignity. The CVS is a well-known pharmaceutical company and anything that they could do without caution could greatly affect their company name. The board should be able to know the root source of such a disaster Why something like this happened yet the company is a large technology focused company It appears that the reason for the massive computer outage is that CVS did not set up the data center as a redundant site elsewhere, nor was there a backup for the communications lines to all their drugstores. As a direct result, when water entered the data center, there was no possibility to maintain an operational data center. Furthermore, it seems like CVS does not have a proper disaster recovery strategy that would include a business impact analysis and risk assessment ( Aven, 2016 ). Given that the drugstores rely on their computer systems to process insurance claims and fill prescriptions, both very important business processes, a BIA would have uncovered some of the shortcomings, thus avoiding the disaster in the first place. The objectives of the BIA can be summarized as follows: Prioritize the availability and recovery order of business processes and information. 2

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
