DENSITY CONTROL OF DRILLING FLUIDS

Density Control Density control involves the removal of solids or the addition of solid (weighting up). Solids removed are the drilled cuttings (undesirable) and there are four methods used. Screening - shale shaker Forced settling - desander, desilter, centrifuge, & hydrocyclone Chemical flocculation - addition of chemicals to flocculate Dilution - addition of water The equipment mentioned above are arranged in order of clay size removal and dilution occurs upstream and chemical addition occurs downstream Unweighted fluids - use in series: shale shaker desander desilter centrifuge Weighted fluids - use shale shaker screen and hydro- cyclones (in series), a combination called mud cleaner.

Solid Control Equipment for Unweighted Mud System This figure is a schematic arrangement of the solid control equipment for unweighted clay/water mud . The various components are arranged in decreasing order of clay size removal to prevent clogging. Dilution water is introduced upstream of the hydrocyclones to increase their separation efficiency. Each device is arranged to prevent newly processed fluid from cycling back to the input of the device.

Solid Control Equipment for Weighted Mud System This figure is a schematic arrangement of the solid control equipment for weighted clay/water mud . Here hydrocyclones cannot be used alone on weighted systems because their cut off point falls in the particle- size range of barite. They are sometimes used in conjunction with a shaker screen (a combination called mud cleaner). Mud cleaner is suited best for muds of moderate density (below 15 lbm/gal). The fine solids that pass through the screen can be

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
