Oil-Base Drilling Fluids These are fluids with oil as the continuous phase and diesel is the most commonly used oil also called invert or water-in-oil emulsion muds Basic components are oil (diesel or mineral oil), H 2 O, emulsifier, wettability reversal agent (surfactants), barite (for density), viscosity, filtration, and alkalinity control agents, & CaCl 2 or NaCl (for salinity control of the water- phase) mineral oil is less toxic than diesel oil Characteristics of oil/diesel used in oil muds are: low flammability must be freed of aromatic compounds aniline point must be > 140 o F, and must have acceptable viscosity

Flash Point (low flammability) Viscosity Aromatic Content - indicated by the aniline point Aniline point is the lowest temp. at which equal volumes of aniline and oil are completely miscible. Oils having a high aromatic content have low aniline point. An aniline point - 150 o F, indicates a low aromatic content Toxicity Biodegradability Base Fluid - Characteristics

Oil Muds Applications; drilling through highly dispersible shales & limestone and salts. Mechanisms; 1. Prevents contact between water and formation. 2. Water is present as tiny droplets (sub micron to micron) in an invert emulsion, surrounded by emulsifiers. Notes Emulsifiers in filtrate cause reservoir damage. Environmental issues, also cost (very expensive).
