What are some of the dominant and critical perspectives on Asian Americans that you find important for your understanding of community? This week’s lecture material emphasizes two dominant racial paradigms that have affected Asian American experiences in the US: white supremacy—the pseudoscientific belief that promotes inferiority of POC and perpetuates overt and covert racism, and assimilation—the forced and unforced ways in which POC feel the need to fit into American society. The above perspectives have both certainly influenced my understanding of community growing up in a largely white community: being viewed as strange for certain cultural elements of my heritage (e.g. food) as well as the resulting effect of feeling pressured to assimilate, to seem normal and not “other.” I have also witnessed firsthand the similar struggle that other minorities have faced.
